I thought that for today’s blog post I would share something a little strange with you guys. This is about my allergic reaction to alcohol. I first really began to realise that there was something wrong whenever I would have alcohol when I was around 19. At the time I just put it down to drinking far too much. Mixing my drinks and not having enough food in my stomach to prepare me for the heavy evening out. The older that I got, the worse I would feel. Again I would think this was pretty normal as I always heard that the older you get, the harder it is for you to get over a hangover. The way that I felt just took everything to the very extreme.
To begin with, it was just severe headaches, but then overtime it would affect my chest more and more. The following day after drinking, even if it was just a steady evening with a couple of glasses of wine with my meal, I would near enough have a panic attack. The following day, my chest would be so tight I would have a panic attack. I would lay in bed in the morning and it would feel like I have a person laid on top of me. The sheer weight on my chest as unbearable. It really did scare me because it almost felt like I was just going to stop breathing.
As things progressed and the allergy got worse, it got to a stage where it was just like my body was trying to reject the alcohol that I was putting inside. After just a glass of wine or two, I would begin to sweat profusely and then I would be sick. I don’t just mean sick either, I honestly mean like projectile and I would be in such a state. Honestly, the worse thing about this was that my body would ache so much afterwards. I honestly felt like it was my body trying to empty everything that it shouldn’t have, and the convulsions ripped through my whole body and I have honestly never felt anything like that before.
For the alcohol that I would still have in my system, it felt like my internal organs were suffering. Such as, just after drinking my tongue would feel swollen and my throat hurt. Then as the night went on, my stomach would ache and that awful tightness in my chest would come back. Normally, the following morning I would get something like cystitis as it passes through me. My body would also break out in hives in random places for a good 24-48 hours after I had my last drink.
In the end, I went to the doctors because I was sick of this happening. I just wanted to know for sure that there was an issue with alcohol. I had a couple of blood tests done and around 5 days later I got a response from the doctor. They said that I do in fact have an allergy. Even though it didn’t bother me as such because it is quite a rarity that I do go out and have a drink. I do find that a glass of wine or two helps to bring me out of my shell. That is something that I find quite hard. I do find that most of the time I do have one drink to try to coax me out of my quietness. But I have to draw a line there.
I thought that I would share this because drinking these days is just the norm. I get so many questions and weird looks about why I don’t drink, and sometimes I wish that I could. But I have to listen to my body and it is really telling me that I cannot have this substance. Turns out that I have an allergic reaction to alcohol!
Leave me a comment down below. Let me know how you are with alcohol, do you suffer afterwards or are you a seasoned drinker?
